Welcome to ethnicwind.com. We specialize in Irish whistles, Tin Whistles, Penny
Whistles, Low Whistles.... They are all pretty much the same thing. The most popular
keys are the high D Irish Whistle, and the Low D Irish Whistle. A close third and fourth
are the middle A and G Irish Whistles, which are still categorized as low whistles by
some. At ethnicwind.com we make many different styles of tin whistles, or Irish whistles,
or pennywhistles, whichever term makes you happier. We have the Ceol Pro Model that
is a whistle made from aluminum and copper. We have a PVC Irish whistle, these are
mostly for low whistles. We have a pretty nifty clear acrylic Irish whistle, that has been
very popular. We also make the Amhran Dubh whistle which is a PVC body and a
plastic mouth piece. Then of course we have the copper low and high whistles, and
even the very tiny micro whistles. Our whistles come in a variety of finishes and designs.
We are one of the only makers that offers custom designed whistles. The whistles
designs are mostly painted on by Nick Metcalf. Each whistle, whether designed with
interesting paint, or simply the metal look is clear coated to protect the metal from
harm, and also to keep any trace elements of copper or aluminum from being absorbed
by your body. Each Whistle is carefully hand made and hand tuned to very exact
specifications. They are not mass produced, and they are precisely tuned for the
professional musician. You are guaranteed to be pleased with the whistle you
purchase, and if for any reason you aren't you will get a replacement that you will be
happy with, or a full refund. That means you can try any of our Irish whistles risk free.

What is an Irish Whistle?

An Irish whistle is a transverse flute. It is end blown and features a whistle mouthpiece with a tube or conical body. The
Irish whistle has six tone holes and plays two octaves of a major scale. The mouthpiece consists of a small windway that
is blown into. Then there is a window and a blade on the other side of it that the air blown into the windway hits and
produces a sound. The mouthpiece is open to the body and the notes are achieved by covering and uncovering holes.
The mouthpiece is often called a fipple, and many makers use a block inside a tube to make the fipple. There are many
varieties of whistles made out of a plethora of materials. You can find the cheap plastic mouthpiece whistles in many
music stores. There are also some cheap whistles that are made from a sheet of tin rolled around a small wooden
block. This is perhaps the oldest design and probably used to cost about a penny, which gave it the name of penny
whistle. Today whistles are made from just about anything you can think of. The whistles of ethnicwind.com are all
handmade. They use delrin for the fipple pug, which is a very dense and machinable polymer material that is non toxic
and very good for working with. It has become popular among whistle makers because of the beautiful finish that is
easily achieved and the ease with which you can machine it.

Irish whistles are traditionally made in the key of D. This is the key that most Irish songs are played in, and the most
common key to have a whistle in. The demands of the modern musician however have called for other keys to be
made. Of late Low whistles have been added to the instruments of traditional Irish music. They are a far more recent
invention, and how a much deeper lower haunting sound than their tiny predecessors. They are often a larger replica
of their smaller high whistles. We offer both high and low whistles, and a range of keys that includes more whistles than
almost any other maker.
